April 2010:
881c and 891c Super Saloon Update:
South Island Super Champs
20 cars contested this years SI Champs held at Woodford Glen. They were split into two groups of 10 for two heats, then back together for a 20 lap winner take all final.
Ampro Group
This group featured BRT’S 881c Bruce Boulton as well as 12n, 21n, 46e, 27c and 6c to name a few.
Race 1: 881c started off pole position and lead the field into turn 1. Bruce drove well but as the race went on the car started to slow a little causing Bruce to lose positions. At race end Bruce finished 7th.
Race 2: Bruce started from his rear grid. From flag fall Bruce was flying passing several cars, but by mid race he was forced to pull off onto the infield due to a mechanical problem which was later found to be the mag again! Argh! This unfortunately ended the SI Champs for Bruce.
Koken Group
This group had our very own 891c Josh Boulton as well as 3nz, 58c and 17c to name a few.
Race 1: 891c started his first heat from grid 7. Passing was hard in this heat as we were caught up with a few of the slower cars and not to mention being constantly knocked about by other cars. Josh drove well to bring the car home 5th.
Race 2: Josh now had his front start which saw him off grid 4. Once again passing proved hard with the cars all at very similar pace. By mid race the track went slick and now passing was non existent. At race end Josh finished 3rd behind Ron Taylor and race winner Mike Verdona.
FINAL: Josh started the 20 lap final from grid 6. From the start Josh started to work his way through the field passing several cars. By mid race Josh begun hunting down the leaders who had opened up a small lead on the rest of the field. We then had a bit of luck go our way when the cautions came on closing the field up. During the caution leaders 58c and 6c both pulled out due to Mechanical Damage! With just a handful of laps to go 27c now lead from 12n and 891c. From the restart Josh tried everything to get by 12n but was unable to complete any of his moves. At race end it was 27c Trevor Elliott who crossed in 1st with Shane 2nd and Josh in 3rd. Shane was later relegated to third moving Josh up to 2nd overall!
Elf Oil Series WFG Round 3
Well after a tame first two rounds down South this round turned into a derby with wrecked cars in every race. With a lot of the cars having at least 1 DNF this was anyone’s round.
Bruce was first up out of the BRT cars in the time trial. He went out and set the 7th fastest time while Josh set a fantastic time to be 2nd fastest overall.
Race 1: Josh started from grid 2 with Bruce off 7. From the start Josh went straight into the lead while Bruce was having trouble with other cars driving into him. Eventually a tyre popped on 881c giving Bruce a DNF for race 1. Meanwhile Josh continued out front winning the heat comfortably and get round 3 off to a good start for 891c.
Race 2: After our front grids in race 1 it was time for our back grids with Bruce starting 10th and Josh off 15. From the start Josh went to the outside and began working his way through the field while Bruce found himself on the infield again due to some very amateur driving from other competitors causing another flat tyre! Josh who was flying through the field was also caught up in other peoples messes ending up with damage to the entire right front end on the 891c machine. With both cars having DNF’S in this race we had a lot of work to do in the final.
FINAL: Josh started off grid 9 while Bruce had to start from grid 15. Both cars got off to a great start making their way towards the front. By mid race Josh had climbed up to 5th until a car spun in front of him. Some quick thinking meant Josh only just hit the spun car with the right front. During the caution the referees were not happy with the now buckled looking rim. However the rim only had a dent in it meaning it was safe and at no risk to anyone and he should have been able to continue. The referees who were still not happy ordered Josh off the track and out of the race a terrible and costly decision! When the race got back under way it became a race of survival with Bruce driving well and keeping out of trouble to finish 5th
NZ Super Saloon GP and Super Saloon Teams Champs Dunedin
This was one of our biggest events of the year after not attending the nationals we wanted to do well. Both BRT cars were present however the night got off to a bad start after 881c pulled off in the warm up laps with a suspected cracked piston. This put Bruce out for the entire meeting. In freezing cold temperatures and gale force winds Heat 1 was up. Josh started off grid 1 and immediately shot out into the lead but after a few laps the rain started to come down with the referees deciding to call the race. After the rain stopped they restarted the race with Josh having to do it all again. Josh drove well again to pull away from the field and start the NZGP in the best possible way with a great win.
Heat 2: Josh started this race from grid 12. From the start Josh immediately went to the outside passing a number of cars. As the race went on the car was getting better and better with Josh putting in some quick laps. By race end Josh finished 6th giving him grid 4 for the winner take all final.
Final: The 25 lap final started with a bang when 2nd place 5b Steve Flynn spun on the second corner causing a huge pile up knocking out several big names. After the carnage cleared the race was restarted and two drivers immediately battled for the top spot. 21n Ian Burson and 891c Josh Boulton raced side by side lap after lap with the rest of the field a good half a lap behind. These two put on a great display of Super Saloon racing with some fantastic driving! By race end it was 21n Ian Burson who crossed the line 1st with Josh right behind in 2nd 3rd went to 2nz Shane McIntyre.
The following night we had our very first Super Saloon Teams Champs. There were 8 Teams (Waikato x1, Nelson x1, Blenheim x1, Christchurch x2, Otago x2 and 1 other). Our Team (The LRC Allstars / Blenheim) consisted of 881c Bruce Boulton, 1nz Brent Emerson, 46e Paddy North and 891c Josh Boulton. Bruces’ motor still wasn’t running right so we were down to three cars, but what a great night it was, we won all our rounds with both Brent and Josh sharing the wins. In the final our Team drove brilliantly to take out the first ever Super Saloon Teams Champs. Second were the Canterbury Winners with Waikato third.
871c Modified Update
Modified Dirt Cup 2010
After a long trip North Luke and Greg made it to Auckland to contest the 2010 Modified Dirt Cup at Waikaraka Park. 26 cars from all over NZ were split into two groups to contest 2 x 15 lap races for points (marble draw and reverse). The top 6 on points would then run in a pole shuffle. The top 18 would qualify for the final with the remaining two positions decided by a repercharge. So how did Luke go?? Luke won his first heat and came 7th in the second heat to be 5th overall. In the pole shuffle Luke came up against 6a, 8s, 3nz, and 1nz which he beat to become the top qualifier!! In the 30 lap winner take all final Luke lead from start to finish driving him and the BRT 871c Machine to Victory to become the 2010 Modified Dirt Cup Champion!!
Canterbury Modifieds
The Canterbury Modified Champs saw a good field of 12 cars assemble at Woodford Glen to compete for the title. Luke raced well with a 4th place in race 1 and a 3rd in race 2. After two heats 3nz Glen Leech lead overall on 24 with 871c and 5gm tied for 2nd on 19 points each. In the final Luke shot out into the front to lead from start to finish while further back 3nz finished 3rd with 5gm 4th. After the points were tallied it was 3nz Glen Leech 1st 871c Luke Keegan 2nd and 5gm Brandon Parkinson 3rd.

3 February 2010:
Hi all,
Well the Team are now back from our Dunedin road trip which had both Supers (891c and 881c) competing for the South Pacific Grand Prix and Otago Champs. The Otago Champs were run over three 12 lap heats with the South Pacific GP decided by a winner take all 20 lap final.
Heat 1 for the Otago Champs had 3nz Mike Verdona off pole with Josh 891c on grid 2. Bruce 881c started this heat from grid 8. As the race begun 3nz shot out into the lead with 891c chasing hard in second, further back 881c was flying making several passes in the first few laps. With the race end just a few laps away 891c made his move with a great pass to take the lead and the win with 49c home in second while 881c drove a fantastic race to finish 3rd. Unfortunately for 3nz Mike Verdona this was the end of his night due to engine damage.
Heat 2 was all 881c Bruce Boulton driving an awesome race to take the win, while Josh who started 7th came through the field to finish a fantastic second!
Heat 3 was the deciding heat for the Otago Champs and with the top 3 cars on points off grids 1, 2 and 3 it was sure to be a close finish. As the lights went green Josh and Bruce took off into the lead where they stayed from start to finish with Josh home 1st and Bruce home 2nd.
Overall Results: 1st 891c Josh Boulton 2nd 881c Bruce Boulton 3rd 49c Neil Robertson.
The South Pacific GP winner take all final had an all BRT front row with Josh off pole and Bruce off 2. From the start it was all BRT with Josh and Bruce pulling away from the field to sit 1st and 2nd comfortably. Josh went on to open up a huge lead to take the win by over half a lap with Bruce driving a great race for second while third went to 49c Neil Robertson.
We now take a break from our racing to attend the 2010 Superstock Teams Champs in Palmy North. We are really looking forward to this event as it is a great chance for our Team to relax while watching some of the Worlds best battle it out over two amazing nights. Our very own Ricky Boulton (861n) will be competing in this event for the Stratford Scrappers Team. Good Luck Ricky and Team.
Our next meeting is the South Island Super Saloons at Woodford Glen. With the cars running well and the Team in great spirits after winning 7 of the last 8 races we cant wait for this one.
To finish this week BRT would like to Congratulate 25i now 3nz, Mike Verdona and Crew for their outstanding achievement at the 2010 NZ Super Saloon Champs! Well Done Guys!!
Check back in a few weeks time for the South Island Super Saloon update until then GO THE SCRAPPERS!!
Cheers Johnny.
27 January 2010:
BRT SEASON SO FAR:
Hey All,
Sorry for the lack of updates this season! From now on I will try to update this website after each meeting! Our 2009/2010 season didn’t begin until the Fireworks meeting at Woodford Glen due to some Off Season Drama’s. Since the season began right up till Christmas the BRT cars have been plagued with Mechanical Problems. This Year we decided not to attend the NZ Super Saloon Champs at Huntly as the cost along with the distance to travel just isn’t worth it when the cars are not running right.
Our first good meeting was the first two rounds of the Elf Oil Super Series held at Dunedin and Cromwell. This is a new Series for the South Island Super Saloons which sees 18 cars race 5 rounds (each at a different venue)The Format has each driver do a 1 lap time trial with the fastest starting race 1 on pole 2nd fastest off grid 2 etc. Race 2 the grids are reversed from race 1. After 2 heats the top 6 on points go into a shootout to determine the grids for the first 3 rows with grids 7 to 18 filled from highest to lowest on points for the 25 lap final. So how did BRT go??
DUNEDIN
891c ‘the Outlaw’ Josh Boulton set the 8th fastest time in the time trial while 881c ‘Big Daddy’ Bruce Boulton set the 10th fastest time.
Race 1: Josh drove a great race with some great passes to finish 3rd from grid 8 while Bruce raced well to finish 9th.
Race 2: Bruce started off grid 9 with Josh off 11. As the lights went green both BRT cars were flying following one another round the outside passing car after car! With only a handful of laps to go Bruce had a tyre let go while running in 5th giving him a DNF and 17th overall. Josh however continued to charge through the field to finish fourth!
FINAL: Bruce started off grid 16 while Josh started 3rd. Bruce drove an amazing race passing cars high and low on the track to finish a well earned 9th place. Josh also drove well going straight to second at the start then begun hunting down 58c who had a half track lead. With a few laps to go Josh and Richie ran side by side however the track slicked off and Richie held on to take the win while 21n and 27c also snuck through for 2nd and 3rd with Josh finishing fourth.
CROMWELL
891c set the 3rd fastest time in the time trial while 881c set the 8th fastest time.
Race 1: Bruce started off grid 8 while Josh started third. Both drivers had a tough first race with Bruce finishing 8th and Josh home 5th
Race 2: Bruce started off grid 11 while Josh started back in 15th. This was another tough race as passing was hard with some slower cars starting midfield. Patience was the key here with Josh working his way carefully through the field to finish 9th while Bruce came home in 11th
Shootout: Josh was the 6th placed car for the shootout so had nothing to lose. He raced amazingly to go from 6th to 2nd for the final!
FINAL: Bruce started the final from grid 11 and immediately started to pass cars on the outside in superb style. Josh was in 2nd and with the laps counting down he began to close the gap to 1st. With a Few laps to go Josh caught Richie but was unable to make the pass as Richie was able to get a lapped car in between them which allowed Richie to take the win with Josh second with 27c 3rd. Bruce continued his great drive to finish 6th.
After two rounds Bruce is 10th overall with Josh currently 2nd. The ‘Outlaw’ 891 car was still not at full health during this event however if this is what it can do now we cant wait to see how it goes when its 100%!
If you missed the first 2 rounds there are still three more rounds remaining (Christchurch Feb 27, Blenheim March 26th and Nelson March 27th ). This is a MUST see event featuring 18 of the South Islands BEST Super Saloon Drivers/Cars/Teams in an amazing show!
After the Elf Oil Super Series we then had a three week break which the Team spent going over the cars finding some faults along the way. These were fixed and the cars reassembled for our next two meetings which were Club nights at our home track Woodford Glen. We are pleased to finally say that the problems we had at the start of the season are now a thing of the past! The cars are now on pace and finishing all races with some great results. Out of the 6 races 881c Bruce Boulton has had 2 wins and a second while 891c Josh Boulton has won 3 races. Josh also won the Feature race at the last meeting after starting ¾ of a lap down to the A Grades and Midfield in the Supers he caught and passed all cars taking a great win!
UP AND COMING EVENTS FOR 881 AND 891
This weekend (30th of January) BRT head to Dunedin for the South Pacific Grand Prix and Otago Champs. This is our last meeting before the South Island Super Saloon Champs which are on the 13th of Feb at Woodford Glen. Josh is the current #2 in the South Island and with both cars going well now, we are really looking forward to this one.
871c Modified - NZ Champs at Woodford Glen
Luke Keegan and the 871c BRT Modified were lucky to even make this event as two weeks before, the engine died due to a major mechanical fault. Luke, Greg and the BRT Team worked hard and managed to get the car back together for the NZ Champs. After night 1 was called off due to rain it was decided to run the title over 1 night with 3 heats and a winner take all final.
Race 1: Luke started off grid 4 and from the start it was fast clean racing with the race going without stoppage. Luke raced well and finished 4th.
Race 2: Luke had his rear start in this heat and from the green light he started to pass some cars. However a few laps into this race the driveshaft let go ending Lukes first NZ Champs.
Congratulations to Jaime Fox 1nz, Stuart Rose 2nz and Glen Leech 3nz.
The next meeting for Luke was the NZ Modified Grand Prix on the 16th of January at a very sunny Greenstone Park Speedway, Greymouth. After the bad luck that destroyed the NZ Champs we were hoping for a good result in this one.
Race 1: Luke drew grid 2 with hometown car 5gm Brandon Parkinson off pole. From the start it was all Luke who lead and pulled away from the pack. Halfway through the race 5gm pulled off onto the infield while the biggest mover was 84c Natasha Rodgers. With a handful of laps to go 84c took the lead with 71s John Jackson also going through into second, Luke now third. The following lap 84c pulled off onto the infield handing the lead and the win to 71s with 871c second and 67c Nigel Niven third.
Race 2: A reverse grid saw Luke start near the rear of the field. From the beginning of the race Luke started to work his way through the field with some great passing to finish 5th place. After the two heats the points were tallied and it was 71s John Jackson off pole with Luke off grid 2.
20 Lap Final: The winner take all final got underway and from the start 71s appeared to be struggling with his setup. Luke knew this was his chance and for a few laps they raced side by side with both drivers giving their all. 71s then ran wide into turn 1 which Luke capitalised on to take the lead. Luke then pulled away to take the win and become the 2009/2010 NZ Modified Grand Prix Champion!! 2nd place went to 71s John Jackson while 3rd went to 3nz Glen Leech.
Luke would like to thank the following people… Josh B, Brendon, Johnny and Colin from BRT. John Lovelady from LRC and Greg Keegan (dad) for his time and effort.
UP AND COMING EVENTS FOR 871
The next meeting for Luke is a Club night on the 13th of Feb. This is the last meeting before he heads North to Waikaraka Park in Auckland for the Modified Dirt Cup. With the NZ Modified Champs in Auckland next season this will be a great opportunity for Luke to prepare for this.
Well that is all for now. Check back soon for our results and report from Dunedin.
Cheers Johnny
21 October 2009:
Hi all, what a busy time of year this is for all us speedway freaks. I only have time for a quick update as I still have not got the engine in my car, so need to hurry back out to the shed.
Late model bodies, that is what the talk is all about. We have seen a lot and had a lot to do with late model teams in the US and in my opinion I don't like them, they are huge and ugly but they do have a nice front shape that does look sort of sharp, so we set about building a new mould for the new 891 chassis, taking what we think were the best elements from the late model shape. We are happy with the results, what do you think? The 881 car is finished, just waiting on the engine to be dropped in, and she is all go. The mod is really just waiting on an engine as well but should be out for the Fireworks show on the 31 October. See you all at the track.
