Latest news from the Boulton Racing Team ...
3 February 2010:
Hi all,
Well the Team are now back from our Dunedin road trip which had both Supers (891c and 881c) competing for the South Pacific Grand Prix and Otago Champs. The Otago Champs were run over three 12 lap heats with the South Pacific GP decided by a winner take all 20 lap final.
Heat 1 for the Otago Champs had 3nz Mike Verdona off pole with Josh 891c on grid 2. Bruce 881c started this heat from grid 8. As the race begun 3nz shot out into the lead with 891c chasing hard in second, further back 881c was flying making several passes in the first few laps. With the race end just a few laps away 891c made his move with a great pass to take the lead and the win with 49c home in second while 881c drove a fantastic race to finish 3rd. Unfortunately for 3nz Mike Verdona this was the end of his night due to engine damage.
Heat 2 was all 881c Bruce Boulton driving an awesome race to take the win, while Josh who started 7th came through the field to finish a fantastic second!
Heat 3 was the deciding heat for the Otago Champs and with the top 3 cars on points off grids 1, 2 and 3 it was sure to be a close finish. As the lights went green Josh and Bruce took off into the lead where they stayed from start to finish with Josh home 1st and Bruce home 2nd.
Overall Results: 1st 891c Josh Boulton 2nd 881c Bruce Boulton 3rd 49c Neil Robertson.
The South Pacific GP winner take all final had an all BRT front row with Josh off pole and Bruce off 2. From the start it was all BRT with Josh and Bruce pulling away from the field to sit 1st and 2nd comfortably. Josh went on to open up a huge lead to take the win by over half a lap with Bruce driving a great race for second while third went to 49c Neil Robertson.
We now take a break from our racing to attend the 2010 Superstock Teams Champs in Palmy North. We are really looking forward to this event as it is a great chance for our Team to relax while watching some of the Worlds best battle it out over two amazing nights. Our very own Ricky Boulton (861n) will be competing in this event for the Stratford Scrappers Team. Good Luck Ricky and Team.
Our next meeting is the South Island Super Saloons at Woodford Glen. With the cars running well and the Team in great spirits after winning 7 of the last 8 races we cant wait for this one.
To finish this week BRT would like to Congratulate 25i now 3nz, Mike Verdona and Crew for their outstanding achievement at the 2010 NZ Super Saloon Champs! Well Done Guys!!
Check back in a few weeks time for the South Island Super Saloon update until then GO THE SCRAPPERS!!
Cheers Johnny.
27 January 2010:
BRT SEASON SO FAR:
Hey All,
Sorry for the lack of updates this season! From now on I will try to update this website after each meeting! Our 2009/2010 season didn’t begin until the Fireworks meeting at Woodford Glen due to some Off Season Drama’s. Since the season began right up till Christmas the BRT cars have been plagued with Mechanical Problems. This Year we decided not to attend the NZ Super Saloon Champs at Huntly as the cost along with the distance to travel just isn’t worth it when the cars are not running right.
Our first good meeting was the first two rounds of the Elf Oil Super Series held at Dunedin and Cromwell. This is a new Series for the South Island Super Saloons which sees 18 cars race 5 rounds (each at a different venue)The Format has each driver do a 1 lap time trial with the fastest starting race 1 on pole 2nd fastest off grid 2 etc. Race 2 the grids are reversed from race 1. After 2 heats the top 6 on points go into a shootout to determine the grids for the first 3 rows with grids 7 to 18 filled from highest to lowest on points for the 25 lap final. So how did BRT go??
DUNEDIN
891c ‘the Outlaw’ Josh Boulton set the 8th fastest time in the time trial while 881c ‘Big Daddy’ Bruce Boulton set the 10th fastest time.
Race 1: Josh drove a great race with some great passes to finish 3rd from grid 8 while Bruce raced well to finish 9th.
Race 2: Bruce started off grid 9 with Josh off 11. As the lights went green both BRT cars were flying following one another round the outside passing car after car! With only a handful of laps to go Bruce had a tyre let go while running in 5th giving him a DNF and 17th overall. Josh however continued to charge through the field to finish fourth!
FINAL: Bruce started off grid 16 while Josh started 3rd. Bruce drove an amazing race passing cars high and low on the track to finish a well earned 9th place. Josh also drove well going straight to second at the start then begun hunting down 58c who had a half track lead. With a few laps to go Josh and Richie ran side by side however the track slicked off and Richie held on to take the win while 21n and 27c also snuck through for 2nd and 3rd with Josh finishing fourth.
CROMWELL
891c set the 3rd fastest time in the time trial while 881c set the 8th fastest time.
Race 1: Bruce started off grid 8 while Josh started third. Both drivers had a tough first race with Bruce finishing 8th and Josh home 5th
Race 2: Bruce started off grid 11 while Josh started back in 15th. This was another tough race as passing was hard with some slower cars starting midfield. Patience was the key here with Josh working his way carefully through the field to finish 9th while Bruce came home in 11th
Shootout: Josh was the 6th placed car for the shootout so had nothing to lose. He raced amazingly to go from 6th to 2nd for the final!
FINAL: Bruce started the final from grid 11 and immediately started to pass cars on the outside in superb style. Josh was in 2nd and with the laps counting down he began to close the gap to 1st. With a Few laps to go Josh caught Richie but was unable to make the pass as Richie was able to get a lapped car in between them which allowed Richie to take the win with Josh second with 27c 3rd. Bruce continued his great drive to finish 6th.
After two rounds Bruce is 10th overall with Josh currently 2nd. The ‘Outlaw’ 891 car was still not at full health during this event however if this is what it can do now we cant wait to see how it goes when its 100%!
If you missed the first 2 rounds there are still three more rounds remaining (Christchurch Feb 27, Blenheim March 26th and Nelson March 27th ). This is a MUST see event featuring 18 of the South Islands BEST Super Saloon Drivers/Cars/Teams in an amazing show!
After the Elf Oil Super Series we then had a three week break which the Team spent going over the cars finding some faults along the way. These were fixed and the cars reassembled for our next two meetings which were Club nights at our home track Woodford Glen. We are pleased to finally say that the problems we had at the start of the season are now a thing of the past! The cars are now on pace and finishing all races with some great results. Out of the 6 races 881c Bruce Boulton has had 2 wins and a second while 891c Josh Boulton has won 3 races. Josh also won the Feature race at the last meeting after starting ¾ of a lap down to the A Grades and Midfield in the Supers he caught and passed all cars taking a great win!
UP AND COMING EVENTS FOR 881 AND 891
This weekend (30th of January) BRT head to Dunedin for the South Pacific Grand Prix and Otago Champs. This is our last meeting before the South Island Super Saloon Champs which are on the 13th of Feb at Woodford Glen. Josh is the current #2 in the South Island and with both cars going well now, we are really looking forward to this one.
871c Modified - NZ Champs at Woodford Glen
Luke Keegan and the 871c BRT Modified were lucky to even make this event as two weeks before, the engine died due to a major mechanical fault. Luke, Greg and the BRT Team worked hard and managed to get the car back together for the NZ Champs. After night 1 was called off due to rain it was decided to run the title over 1 night with 3 heats and a winner take all final.
Race 1: Luke started off grid 4 and from the start it was fast clean racing with the race going without stoppage. Luke raced well and finished 4th.
Race 2: Luke had his rear start in this heat and from the green light he started to pass some cars. However a few laps into this race the driveshaft let go ending Lukes first NZ Champs.
Congratulations to Jaime Fox 1nz, Stuart Rose 2nz and Glen Leech 3nz.
The next meeting for Luke was the NZ Modified Grand Prix on the 16th of January at a very sunny Greenstone Park Speedway, Greymouth. After the bad luck that destroyed the NZ Champs we were hoping for a good result in this one.
Race 1: Luke drew grid 2 with hometown car 5gm Brandon Parkinson off pole. From the start it was all Luke who lead and pulled away from the pack. Halfway through the race 5gm pulled off onto the infield while the biggest mover was 84c Natasha Rodgers. With a handful of laps to go 84c took the lead with 71s John Jackson also going through into second, Luke now third. The following lap 84c pulled off onto the infield handing the lead and the win to 71s with 871c second and 67c Nigel Niven third.
Race 2: A reverse grid saw Luke start near the rear of the field. From the beginning of the race Luke started to work his way through the field with some great passing to finish 5th place. After the two heats the points were tallied and it was 71s John Jackson off pole with Luke off grid 2.
20 Lap Final: The winner take all final got underway and from the start 71s appeared to be struggling with his setup. Luke knew this was his chance and for a few laps they raced side by side with both drivers giving their all. 71s then ran wide into turn 1 which Luke capitalised on to take the lead. Luke then pulled away to take the win and become the 2009/2010 NZ Modified Grand Prix Champion!! 2nd place went to 71s John Jackson while 3rd went to 3nz Glen Leech.
Luke would like to thank the following people… Josh B, Brendon, Johnny and Colin from BRT. John Lovelady from LRC and Greg Keegan (dad) for his time and effort.
UP AND COMING EVENTS FOR 871
The next meeting for Luke is a Club night on the 13th of Feb. This is the last meeting before he heads North to Waikaraka Park in Auckland for the Modified Dirt Cup. With the NZ Modified Champs in Auckland next season this will be a great opportunity for Luke to prepare for this.
Well that is all for now. Check back soon for our results and report from Dunedin.
Cheers Johnny
21 October 2009:
Hi all, what a busy time of year this is for all us speedway freaks. I only have time for a quick update as I still have not got the engine in my car, so need to hurry back out to the shed.
Late model bodies, that is what the talk is all about. We have seen a lot and had a lot to do with late model teams in the US and in my opinion I don't like them, they are huge and ugly but they do have a nice front shape that does look sort of sharp, so we set about building a new mould for the new 891 chassis, taking what we think were the best elements from the late model shape. We are happy with the results, what do you think? The 881 car is finished, just waiting on the engine to be dropped in, and she is all go. The mod is really just waiting on an engine as well but should be out for the Fireworks show on the 31 October. See you all at the track.

28 August 2009:
Hi everyone,
Time for an update!
Well have we had a ball over the past 2 months. Did a road trip around the USA visiting over 30 states, what a great country it is, vastly different from NZ.
For a starter everything is done on a grand scale.
From their cars to their buildings, bridges, highways, pomp and ceremony at every event (very patriotic which we love). And the food…..holy cow can they eat!
No wonder they have a ballooning (pardon the pun) weight problem!
Meals are huge, fat content-off the scale! Even the drinks come in bucket size glasses and get re-filled for free… just when you’ve literally drowned yourself gutsing the first one down (very hot over there!) along comes the re-fill so hey –its free, can’t waste it –typical kiwi mentality – down the hatch another mouthful of burger (everything is served in a burger). I swear if they knew what a pavlova was it would come in a bun with fries on the side! Then somehow 2hrs later you waddle out from breakfast- yes breakfast –vowing you won’t eat again for a week only to be sucked in a few hours later to put yourself thru that all again. Consequently we all came back quite a bit podgier than when we left.
Anyhow onto the exciting bits.
We attended 2 NASCAR meetings. One at New Hampshire north of NYC and the other was the Daytona 400. What a buzz! We had a camper and stayed on site at the tracks camping grounds along with thousands of other campers- all speedway nuts and making the most of their summer vacation.
Daytona was awesome –the noise horrendous, the crowds huge, the pomp and ceremony out of this world and the crashes monumental. The 10 car pile up at Daytona happened right in front of us and the crowd went crazy-nobody likes Kyle Busch apparently!
Wow if you ever get the chance to go over there make sure you do Daytona NASCARS.
We then headed up through central U.S. and attended four late model meetings.
As the weather was so hot they didn’t start till around 8pm-finishing around 2am
Quite different from our supers-big ol’ whaley cars and rough too –not as classy as NZ Supers. No limits on noise and they are loud! Saw some good racing though.
Very few flat tyres maybe because they run smaller rear tyres than us and they are within the lines of the body.
Good format with their series which made for some interesting races.
Our next and final fix of racecars was at Sonoma San Francisco. We flew over there from Denver and attended the NHRA Drags. What an experience and I have to say just topped Daytona for pure adrenaline. When those bad boys bark down the strip in front of you, its not only ultra loud (split your eardrums if you don’t have ear plugs) but the vibration of all 9500 horses surges through your body like an earthquake.
Absolutely incredible –TV just doesn’t do it justice. Got to meet some of the big names in the pits amongst the multi million dollar rigs. John force is the most popular and a real nice guy (he was lucky enough to get his photo taken with me.) Larry Dixon was also lucky (ha-ha).
Also had a chat with Tony Schumacker and he was nice too. Bought some shirts and hats, but came home with more than that …. great memories!
And now back to reality frosts etc. cars to build cows to calve etc etc. and only weeks to first practice- doubt we’ll make that! The cars are looking pretty naked except for Bruces which is only waiting on a motor. The ex 2nz car has been re-powder coated and is being re-assembled. The new 891 car has just come back from Action Powder Coaters to be paneled out and assembled. Thanks Conrad she look awesome. Josh did some shopping in the states for the new beast so it will have all the usual bling Josh is known for!
The modified has been for a fresh coat of powder and is also due back to be re-assembled, it also had to have a major motor re –think after letting go at Greymouth last year.
We also have Ricky’s new super stock chassis in the shop. Josh has sorted a new body for it –just have to make it fit then build the rest of the car.
So we have a very busy schedule ahead. But we have a great crew to get the job done although two of them are away at the moment. One is in Great Britain and the other also somewhere in Europe. Two others came to the States with us. But the team will be back together soon and no doubt rearing to go.
On that note we are looking for a new spanner guy so if you would like to be part of an exciting forward thinking team and can commit to us for the season please give us a call or flick through an email with your contact details. Look forward to catching up with everyone when the season starts.
Lynda

21 May 2009:
Hi Everyone
Well hasn’t winter come with a hiss and a roar. We’re officially still in autumn but it sure doesn’t feel like it. Looks like feeding out may start earlier this year!
We have already started our off season work on the cars and pulled some motors out. Josh’s new car should be well under way by now and we have started working on some new design ideas too. There is so much to do and a lot of it is very time consuming and with us heading away for six weeks in June we need to get sorted before we go.
Well our first end of season party went off real well and there was a good turnout. We had around 70 show up and all seemed to enjoy themselves judging on the feedback we received. We had the Spit Roast Company do the catering and it was pretty good. We also had some great entertainment in the form of acetyline bombs (Matts creation) which got bigger and louder as the night wore on. They looked impressive as they drifted off into the night tied to an assortment of coloured helium balloons! Great atmosphere and everyone behaved themselves and we’re all looking forward to next year!
Not much else to report this time so will finish off here.
Keep warm and enjoy the off season.
